What did they do in the meantime? Emulate them, because outside of buying used carts, Nintendo wasn't providing an official way to play them on their modern consoles, and at this point it no longer matters. It's not like the fanbase waited almost twenty years for EB to finally get rereleased, and for EBB to finally get a release. Oh, wait, they never released it in the first place. I'm sure Nintendo and its IP holders appreciates its consumer base paying secondhand sellers in Japan for a game cart to dump and patch, as opposed to them getting paid for their work. Going on and on and on about how "illegal" it is to download ROMs and use emulators when that's how the fandom has subsisted and existed in the first place. Seriously, you EarthBound fans boggle my mind. Like you said, why waste money if it's available for free online? It doesn't matter what laws are in place if they're never enforced, so it's not illegal to buy repros or just download the ROM like anyone with a functioning brain between their eyes. There's nothing illegal about buying repros for an outdated, officially unavailable game. You're just blowing out of proportion like you're some kind of law-abiding saint. Some people just want a nice looking cart with their collection.
